A negative result worth publishing
A larger target missed the threshold written down before the run, so the release decision stayed negative even though parts of the result looked promising.
The most useful line in a research plan can be the one that says what failure will look like. It prevents an interesting but insufficient result from being promoted after the fact.
The rule came first
The release gate, evidence requirements and dependent work were frozen before the final result. When the target missed that gate, the correct disposition was negative.
What was preserved
- The promising sub-results.
- The failed release decision.
- The limitation that the evidence came from one controlled system.
- The later policy change, recorded as a new decision rather than a rewrite.
